Change the world

Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre

In 2011 a group of 20 in-service FET Physical Science educators were identified in the NMM region to register for the Science Skills Upgrade Project (SSUP) project. This project consists of two structured NMMU Short Learning Programmes which will cover the content of the new NCS Physical Science syllabus. A modern innovative teaching model based on special DVD's will again be used in 2011. Exposure to selected Physical Science experiments in a fully equipped laboratory also forms part of each SSUP SLP implementation.

After a successful completion of the SSUP programme in November 2011, project educators should be able to:

  • Teach the content of the new NCS Physical Science syllabi with greater confidence and understanding to learners in Grades 10-12
  • Effectively utilize the content and experiment DVD series as a teaching resource in the Physical Science classroom
  • Use activity sheets linked to the Science content and experiment DVD series as a teaching resource in the Physical Science classrooms.

Resource material that will be supplied to each SSUP educator in 2011:

  • Complete study guide that also contains all PowerPoint slides of the topic DVD's in hard copy format.
  • A hard copy compendium of examinable Topic Exercises, pre- and post-experiment discussions/assessments and model solutions.
  • 28 Physical Science content topic DVD's (for own classroom use)
  • 4 Experiment DVD's which include all the Grade 11& 12 experiments and discussions.
  • 1 Independent Physical Science resource Text (for reference and additional exercises)

SSUP Presenters for 2011 are: Mr P Weisswange and Mr M Ndabeni
