The GMMDC’s Professional Teacher Development Project (PLN)

Over the past five years the GMMDC have developed Structured Professional Learning Network (PLN) training and support programmes for in-service mathematics and physical sciences educators. These were offered annually with great success to (on average) more than one hundred mathematics and more than fifty physical sciences educators who teach at FET (Grades 10-12) in schools. In 2018 the mathematics  programme was extended to also include the skills training needs of Senior Phase (Grades 8 & 9) educators.  Both mathematics programmes are currently registered as accredited courses with the South African Council for Educators (SACE).  Plans are in place to register the programme for physical sciences with SACE by the end of 2019.

The PLN programmes consist of a series of eight one-day short learning programmes which carry ten official SACE credits toward the professional development of each teacher. Assignments linked to classroom implementation of the techno-blended model that are used during training form part of the programme design.

The PLN programmes aim to:

  • address ongoing teacher content challenges;
  • promote modern ICT-assisted classroom practice;
  • establish effective pedagogical practice in classrooms that are aligned with a  Techno-Blended approach to teaching mathematics and physical sciences in secondary schools.

PLN projects were implemented in close collaboration with the local leadership of the EC DoBE in each district.  All stakeholders expressed great appreciation for this valuable initiative.
